In fact this picture is from 1998 but I’m of the opinion that it still shows what some/many students want.

However, I think if something like that became true then the education would suffer. Moreover, skilled people would decrease. This would have a bad effect on the labour market as the labour market needs skilled people to develop.

  1. In addition very interesting title. For example Primary and Secondary education in Latvia is free. Including basic education, secondary education lasts for 12 years (i.e. 9 years of basic education + 3 years of secondary education). In Latvia, there is both state-financed and fee-paying higher education.
    For instance in 2004, there were 34 accredited higher education institutions in Latvia, most of which belong to the state, the rest having been founded by other legal entities or private individuals.
    In Latvia still exsist one main problem depends of education: The negative attitude of the Russian media towards the minority education policy is possibly the result of chaotic reform implementation and an indication that important minority education issues have not yet been resolved. More intensive analysis of the arguments “for” and “against” different policy aspects brought forward by various social groups would be useful. Psychological aspects that influence policy implementation should also be considered.

  2. I share your concern over higher education. In the beginning of 90s, there were 20 000 students and 6 schools offering higher education in Estonia. Now there are 50 institutions providing 60 000 students with higher education. I think it is good, that people while working want to improve their knowledge in universities. Still it would definitely devaluate student’s degree, which was acquired in prestigious university, in labour market as they compete with other higher educated workers.

  3. Our education system in Slovenia is changing all the time.
    There are more and more people on the university, so if you want a good job in the future, you really have to have many and also good experiences.
    We also have some problems with government in last years, because they wanted to change the educational legislation on that way, that we have to pay the school fees. So there were many student protest against the government.
    Our university is autonomous and unpaid, so the knowledge is the right and reached for everyone. There should not be a system, who can offer a education only to people who have money.
    But situation is better now, they remove this rough idea for now. But we dont know, what will happened in the future. Maybe we will have to pay the school fees to our children?
    I think that education is a good for everyone, who wants to learn and develope more.
    In last years in Slovenia, for instance, our university system will be exchanged with the european one; the bolonia system. In my university, we allready have this system, but for now, it is a bit confusing, because there is still not developed and tasted enough.

  4. In Latvia we already need to pay even for babies, If you would like that your baby can stay in Kindergarden and get better education in countrie. And for studies in University, we have so small amount of places – where you do not need to pay for your studies and you receive from government scholarship. I think this is very curious situation in my country.

  5. After reading this article I was thinking about what makes school to be a good school?

    I study at Comenius University – one of the oldest and biggest university in Slovakia, and the highest-rated according to the Webometrics ranking of European universities, coming in 227th on the top 500 list.
    But in spite of its prestige in Slovakia, Comenius University faces exactly the same problems as any other Slovak school – financial resources allocated to the educational system.
    This serve as a proof and response for my previous question. In my mind, these are main criterions that make school to be prestige: financial resources, high-quality professors, curriculum and possibility to transfer the knowledge into practice and portfolio of study program.

    It is evident, that there is a widening gap between the overall quality of the educational system in Europe and at the top educational institutions in the US, Japan and increasingly other Asian countries.

    In Slovakia, we don´t pay for school and educational system stays underfinanced in the long run.
    In my mind, if the quality of education system will increase and there will be enough scholarships for socially weak classes, I am not against to pay for the school. However I strongly disagree that paid education equals quality education.

    Making education more international and expand its portfolio of study programs taught entirely in English and other languages, in order to become more international, is one way for Slovakia to come closer to the top European schools.

  6. Thats really interesting about all your countries education systems. I think in the uk, particularly in scotland we have a good education system. Both primary and secondry education is free (7 years in primary and 6 in secondary) then only in scotland the government also pays for university and on top of paying the tuition fees pays an additional sum of money to the student depending upon family income, if the family income is relativly low the student is entitled to a bursary (a sum of money which they dont have to pay back at a later date) or if income is high they have the option of interest free loan paid back in small monthy instalments from their paycheck when in a job and earning over 15,000 a year. The purpose of this money is to aid with things like course materials and on top of these payments it is also possible to claim back money you spend on travel to and from the campus.
    I think this program from the government (SAAS) is really really helpful, giving everyone equal opportunity to gain a higher qualification and entry into the labour market no matter what their home background or financial state.
