You surely know the feeling – its early morning and you have to fight with you own obligations, traffic jam and very often even with your own body which is influenced by big stress. It is not only a long list of tasks waiting for you on working place but very often your nervous boss too. To avoid problems you rather hurry to your office. Of course it is possible that within next couple of hours you will pay more attention to your own problems, not to your tasks, but you do not break the working time and you can be anytime controlled by your boss.

But there is also another possibility. You get up in the morning, you have your breakfast, prepare everything necessary and than you can start to work on your computer to fulfil all tasks agreed with you boss. But you work in your own “office” – in your living room. It is possible that meanwhile you manage to do some other things and it is possible that you finish at midnight. The only problem is to manage your task in time.

Teleworking is an expression used for special type of work performed at home. It is normal qualified work performed on base of a labour contract. The only difference is that some hours or days in week, sometimes even during the whole working time you fill your working tasks at home or on another place equipped with computer and communication connection.

In western Europe telework started to appear in the beginning of 80´s . Telework is used i.e. in Sweden, Finland or Netherlands. This fact is connected with conveniences of the households with computers and modern information and communication technologies. On the other hand balancing of family and working life, fight against women´s and disabled discrimination on the labour market starts to play an important role. It is a way of work that enables parents of small children, people who have to take care of old or disabled family members, aged people of handicapped people to participate on labour market and this makes telework even more attractive. If it is not possible to have full time job another alternative besides part time job appears – it is telework.

  1. ..i can imagine this in could be a good start for lot of people for instance for those you mentioned in the end, disabled family members and so on, but you need some companies working or offering this type of job..maybe in the future we will be thinking the same way as higly-developed countries like Sweden and Finland 😀

  2. I think teleworking is really a good idea and has a lot advantages that most of them you listed in your blog. Technology has delivered the soltutions which enable people to work from home. Thinking about teleworking, of course, more benefits for employees come into my mind, especially regarding the cost and environmental aspects. Working from home saves gas money, eliminates the pollution of traveling to and from job and requires less communutiy resources in terms of roady and transportation. But is there is a downside? Managing your task in time is definitely one of the problems you mentioned. But for me there is one main disadvantage.Isolation? I couldn´t imagine myself working alone every day from home. Working together will all other people is better. Teleworking will make me not happy:-)

  3. I totally agree with you aylacoskun – what you think about isolation. But if you will read my article again you can see what i wrote about working hours. You do not have to work whole working week alone in your house.
    Only some hours or days (when you need it) you can stay at home and do your tasks. Also you can do it in another place equipped with computer and communication connection. (for example in cafe – if you have laptop and mobile phone 🙂 So i think that you do not have to be all the time in your office. 🙂

  4. Ahh okay, now I understand, sorry… I really thought that you have to work the whole week from home. So considering this, I am in favour with this type of job:-) and changed my mind; It would make me happy if I could find a job that offers Teleworking for me. It is really advantageous for lots of people, as you mentioned, especially for us women with balancing family and work life.

  5. IBM started a program like that in 1991 with 200 workers. No matter if directors or administrators. Today every 20000 IBM members of staff can stay at home. I think this is the future. No fix contracts with employers, changing projects with different team members all over the world, and most of them we will only meet in chats, conference software, and communicate per E-mail.
