The financial crisis of 2007 has had and has still a huge negative impact on the global labour market. Situation is still complicated for people who are looking for a job, and there are not as many opportunities than before.
Even if the situation now is better than few years ago, France is still trying to relaunch his economy. For example, the rate of unemployment is 9,2%. We can see that the number of unemployed people is stable for the moment and there is an increase of situations vacant. However the situation is still deteriorated.
One of the solution to relaunch the labour market can be the green jobs. First we are going to see what exactly is a green job. According to the United Nations Environment Program, a green job is a “work in agricultural manufacturing, research and development, administrative and service activities that contribute substantially to the preserving or restoring environmental quality”.
So a green job is a job which contribute to take care of the environment. The “good news” is that the despite the crisis, the sector of renewable energies has kept its potential of employment in France, because the revenue is growing. So this kind of jobs can bring new possibilities of employment.
According to the ministry of the sustainable development, there are today 400 000 green jobs in France. The difficulty is to list the different jobs which have a link with the protection of the environment.Green job is not all the time a creation of a new kind of job, it can be sometimes an evolution, a development of an existing job. For instance, in France, there is an evolution in the building trade: evolution of the techniques and behaviors in order to respect more the environment. In order to acquire these new techniques and requirements, employees must follow a training to adapt oneself. Unfortunately, for the moment, the offer stays insufficient. Some web sites are specialized to help people to find a green jobs in France. Some examples : Ecoemplois.fr, emploi-environnement.com, orientation-environnement.com, …
Despite this trend, there are some reasons to be more pessimistic about the situation of the green jobs in France. Between 2009 and 2010, there has been a decline of the situations vacant of green jobs. According to the cabinet Trendo, it was a 50% decline. The sector of environmental-friendly jobs is now subjected to investment problems and regulatory constraints, in particular on the wind sector. The two sectors which don’t know the crisis are water and waste treatment. For the Association France Nature Environment, it’s the result of “the absence of an ambitious and readable support”.
To conclude, we can see that green jobs can bring new opportunities and employment in France. Unfortunately, the situation has some difficulties, and for the moment this sector no longer appears as prolific as before.
