Business and technological incubators in Slovakia

At many articles or also on this blog you can find information about high unemployment rate in Slovakia. I want to focus our attention to activities that fight against it. Who can create jobs? Your first thought is: “companies”. That is the reason why in all regions of Slovakia are set up business incubators.

According to web page of National Business Incubation Association :

“Business incubators are programs designed to accelerate the successful development of entrepreneurial companies through an array of business support resources and services.” How can business incubator help? For example provide Internet access; help with accounting/financial management;  give advices about bank loans; help with presentation skills; provides marketing and advertising services, know-how services, insurance services and also mentoring activities; it is good way how to access to angel investors or venture capital. The starting entrepreneurs share office administration for example secretarial services (they have them at their disposal together with access to the mailbox and the copying), reception (receptions are the parts of incubator and they provide the primal contact of the clients).and many others activities…

The incubation period in the business incubators in Slovakia is mainly maximum three years.

Currently, exist 16 incubators of two types- business and technological in different regions of Slovakia. Of course it has not yet been developed in full but it is possible to say that the incubators have recently experienced some growth.

The first incubators were set up in 2002 and 2003 thanks to PHARE programme and state budget: Martin, Bratislava, Spišská Nová Ves, Rožňava and technological incubators in Banská Bystrica, Prešov and Košice. The research and technological park in Žilina was reconstructed in 2004.

In 2005, the technological incubators in Sládkovičovo and in Bratislava were established from  PHARE Programme 2002 CBC – Cross-border co-operation Austria – Slovakia. Others the business incubators are located in Prievidza in Moldava nad Bodvou.

  1. Well, long-term unemployment is huge issue in my country(Slovakia) and an idea of business incubators is good. It may help newcomers in business to deal with difficult conditions. Most od small businesses in Slovakia doesn’t last longer than 2 years. There are many reasons for it, mostly unexperience, unsuficiente capital and old technologies. With assistance of incubator companies have better chance to adapt and to become successful.

  2. I found this article interesting because I had never heard about business incubators. I think it can be a good opportunity for companies to develop themselves with an help, and specially for young companies.

With the economic environment which is very difficult in the majority of the countries, some people who want to launch their own companies must think that it’s not the good time to do it. But it’s with this kind of initiatives that the economy will grow better : creation of new companies, which are going to lead to creation of new jobs.

  3. I thought maybe high rate of unemployment is only a South African issue, the only way unemployment can be defeated is through business incubation.Entrepreneurship is not a one man show, entrepreneurs should collaborate in order to speed-up economic inclusion for all.
